Become Whole Again With Holistic self care

Updated: May 4

Introduction: The importance of self-care for overall well-being.

I understand how easy it is to overlook the importance of self-care.

With hectic schedules, looming deadlines, and constant responsibilities. I get it, so taking time for oneself often takes a backseat. However, neglecting self-care can have a detrimental effects on our overall well-being. I know I have been guilty of it myself.

Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity. You hear me talk about self care and the importance of regular and consistant self care, but do I ever mention Holistic self care.

Self care v Holistic self care

Self-care and holistic self-care share a common aim of promoting well-being and balance, but they approach it from slightly different perspectives.

Self-care:

This term generally refers to the practice of taking actions to preserve or improve one's physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health.

Self-care involves activities or practices that individuals engage in to reduce stress, enhance their health, and restore balance in their lives. Examples include exercise, proper nutrition, getting enough sleep, practicing mindfulness or meditation, setting boundaries, seeking therapy or counseling, etc.

Holistic self-care:

On the other hand, this approach expands upon the idea of self-care by considering the interconnectedness of various aspects of a person's life. It recognizes that a person's well-being is influenced not only by physical health but also by emotional, mental, and spiritual factors. Holistic self-care aims to address all of these interconnected areas to achieve a sense of overall wellness and balance. This might involve practices like yoga, tai chi, energy healing, spending time in nature, fostering healthy relationships, engaging in creative activities, and embracing a sense of purpose or spirituality.

In essence, while self-care focuses on individual practices or activities that directly contribute to personal well-being, holistic self-care takes a more comprehensive approach, acknowledging that well-being involves various dimensions of life that are interconnected and interdependent.

Both approaches are valuable and can be integrated to create a well-rounded approach to maintaining and enhancing one's overall health and wellness. Ultimately, the goal is to cultivate a lifestyle that nurtures not only the body but also the mind, emotions, and spirit.

As mentioned holistic self care, involves intentional activities and practices that promote physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well-being.

It is about nurturing oneself, replenishing our energy, and finding balance amidst the chaos of everyday life.

When we prioritize holistic self-care, we are better equipped to handle stress, maintain healthy relationships, and achieve personal and professional goals. While self-care encompasses various aspects, it is crucial to understand the difference between emotional, mental, physical and spiritual self-care.

Physical self care

Lets start with physical self care. It involves regular physical activity, engage in regular exercise that you enjoy, whether it's going for a run, practicing yoga, or dancing.

Movement and exercise has been proven to have a positive impact on spiritual, mental and emotional health. Engaging in physical activities such as walking, jogging, or yoga releases endorphins, reduces stress, and improves overall mood.

While it may be safe to suggest all aspects of self-care are important, physical self-care could be the foundation for our general good health and well being.

Another important area to address is quality sleep. Prioritize getting enough sleep, as it plays a crucial role in rejuvenating your body and mind during sleep. Exercise and or activity during the day especially out in the fresh air may contribute to a better nights sleep.

Remember the way you sleep is a habit you have developed. So be kind to yourself don't expects your sleep patterns to change over night, especially if you have a habit of waking up at a certain time in the night. If that has become your routine it will take conscious effort to change, but change is possible even sleep patterns.

There are natural approaches to improved sleep patterns and taking a holistic self care approach, may actually create some changes you seek towards a good quality night sleep.

Tip

Breathing through each nostril. You can use your thumb and forefinger to do this, placing your thumb on your right nostril, breathing into your left nostril. Then placing your finger over your left nostril and breathing out through your right nostril. Breathing into the right nostril. And then let go and place your thumb over your right nostril and breathe out through the left. Do this several more times.

This balances the hemispheres of your mind and helps you to have a wonderful night sleep.

Incorporate a balanced and nutritious diet, ensuring you fuel your body with the necessary vitamins and minerals it needs to function optimally is paramount for your holistic self care.

If you are seeking to enhance your physical wellbeing through nutrition and exercise, consulting with a nutritionist or personal trainer can be immensely beneficial. They can assess your individual needs, create customized plans, and offer ongoing support to help you achieve your health and fitness goals.

Simply being aware of your diet, which is what you eat and drink on a regular basis is a good place to start. Ask yourself are your meals regular throughout the day and balanced nutritionally.

Do you need to reduce anything or perhaps introduce something that you are not having enough of. Are you drinking enough water ? Are you consuming to much salt, sugar, caffeine, for example. These are all questions you could ask yourself.

Awareness can help us have the intention to make the changes we seek. You could write about your thoughts and feelings in your journal and see where it takes you.

Emotional self-care

The emotional pillar is an essential aspect of holistic self-care. Your emotional health is crucial for maintaining balance in your life and overall wellbeing.

Our emotions play a significant role in how we experience and navigate the world around us. Neglecting our emotional needs can lead to feelings of stress, anxiety, and even physical health issues.

One of the first steps in nurturing your emotional health is developing self-awareness. Take the time to reflect on your emotions and understand what triggers certain feelings.

This can help you identify any patterns or recurring themes that may be impacting your emotional wellbeing. By becoming more aware of your emotions, you can better manage and regulate them.

I often recommend to my clients to keep a journal. It can be a great way to improve our emotional health and well-being. Journaling has shown to reduce stress, boost well-being, provide perspective, encourage emotional processing, and promote self-discovery.

It is important to remember, journaling is a personal experience, so there is no right or wrong way to do it. I may make recommendations but I find working with clients, that once they begging writing they find their own unique way and you will to. You will find your way.

To get started, you’ll need a notebook or a digital platform of some kind to write on. You can choose to write about anything at all, its your journal to express your thoughts feelings and emotions, about anything happening in your life. For example, your thoughts and feelings. How your day went, what went well what perhaps didn't go so well. Emotionally how did either make you feel.

You could write about you goals, dreams, hopes and reflections.

You could also write about your memories. Anything that comes to mind. Taking time each day, perhaps at the end of the day to reflect in your journal could prove to be a valuable emotional self care practice.

Another important aspect of nurturing your emotional health is practicing self-care that involves engaging in activities that bring you joy, relaxation, and fulfilment.

It could be as simple as taking a walk in nature, practicing meditation or mindfulness, or engaging in a hobby that you love.

Prioritizing self-care allows you to recharge and rejuvenate, which is essential for maintaining emotional balance.

A foot soak in essential oils, Epsom salts or perhaps Himalayan salts can be a perfect rejuvenating experience, with the added therapeutic benefits of essentials oil.

Why not allow yourself extra time to meditate while bathing your feet. Try sounds of nature for a wonderful self care experience.

Emotional self-care focuses on nurturing our emotional wellbeing and understanding and managing our feelings, and developing healthy coping mechanisms.

Cultivate healthy relationships: Surround yourself with supportive and positive people who uplift and inspire you. Nurture your relationships with loved ones by spending quality time together, engaging in meaningful conversations, and being there for each other in both good and challenging times.

Building strong connections and a sense of belonging is vital for your emotional wellbeing.

Seek support: Don't hesitate to reach out for support when needed. Whether it's talking to a trusted friend or family member, seeking professional therapy, or joining support groups.

Having a support system can provide a safe space for expressing emotions, gaining insights, and receiving guidance.

Emotional self-care involves recognizing and honouring our emotions, allowing ourselves to feel and express them in healthy ways. It involves practices such as journaling, therapy, mindfulness, and engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfilment.

By practicing emotional self-care, we can develop resilience, improve our relationships, and maintain a positive mindset.

Spiritual self-care

On the other hand, spiritual self-care, unlike emotional self-care involves nurturing our connection to something greater than ourselves.

Spiritual self-care includes practices such as meditation, prayer, or engaging in activities that bring us a sense of purpose and meaning.

By prioritizing spiritual self-care, we can tap into our inner wisdom, cultivate gratitude, and find a sense of peace and fulfilment.

Finding meaning and purpose in life is an essential aspect of spiritual wellbeing and self care. It goes beyond simply going through the motions of daily life; it involves understanding our deeper motivations and aligning our actions with our core values. When we have a sense of purpose, we feel more fulfilled and content.

To discover meaning and purpose, it is important to engage in self-reflection and introspection. This can involve asking ourselves meaningful questions such as, "What brings me joy?" or "What activities make me feel fulfilled?" By exploring our passions, interests, and values, we can begin to uncover what truly matters to us.

Sometimes, finding meaning and purpose involves exploring our personal beliefs and values. This might mean delving into spirituality, religion, or philosophy to gain a deeper understanding of our place in the world.

For some, finding meaning may be connected to making a positive impact on others or contributing to a greater cause.

It is also worth noting that meaning and purpose can evolve and change over time. As we grow and experience new things, our priorities and values may shift. Embracing these changes and being open to new possibilities can lead us to discover new sources of meaning and purpose.

For spiritual self-care, explore practices that resonate with your beliefs and values. This may include meditation, prayer, attending religious or spiritual gatherings, reading inspirational literature, or spending time in nature.

Engaging in activities that align with your spiritual beliefs can help you find a sense of purpose, inner peace, and a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you.

Once you have identified the activities that promote emotional and spiritual well-being, it is important to integrate them into your daily routine. Start by setting aside dedicated time each day or week for these practices. This may require some prioritization and time management, but remember that self-care is essential for maintaining a healthy and balanced life.

Incorporating both emotional and spiritual self-care does not necessarily mean dividing your time evenly between the two. Instead, it is about finding a balance that works for you. Some days, you may feel the need to focus more on emotional self-care, while other days may call for a deeper spiritual connection.

Trust your intuition and listen to what your mind, body, spirit and emotions need in each moment. That is holistic self-care.

Mental self care

The last area to look at is taking care of our mental health which is essential for achieving holistic wellbeing. Our minds play a crucial role in our overall sense of happiness, contentment, and fulfilment.

Mental wellbeing and self-care acknowledges how thoughts have a significant impact on our mental health. It's important to challenge negative thoughts and replace them with positive and empowering ones.

Practicing positive affirmations, reframing negative situations, and focusing on gratitude can help shift our mindset towards a more optimistic and resilient outlook.

Engage in hobbies and creative pursuits. Engaging in activities that bring us joy and fulfilment is essential for our mental wellbeing. Whether it's painting, playing an instrument, gardening, or any other hobby. Carving out time for activities we love can provide a sense of purpose, creativity, and satisfaction. Remember, challenging negative thinking and nurturing our mental health is an ongoing process that requires patience and consistency.

By implementing these strategies, we can cultivate a healthy and balanced mind, contributing to our overall holistic wellbeing.

Additionally, daily routines and rituals offer an opportunity to connect with our inner selves and cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness. Through practices such as journaling, mindfulness, or reflection, we can create moments of stillness and introspection.

These intentional pauses allow us to check in with ourselves, identify any areas of imbalance or stress, and make necessary adjustments to support our overall wellbeing.

It's important to note that creating daily routines and rituals is not about rigid adherence or perfection. Rather, it's about finding a balance that works for us individually. It's about identifying the practices that resonate with our unique needs and preferences and integrating them into our lives in a way that feels authentic and sustainable.

CONCLUSION

Finding balance between the four pilers, mind, body, spirit and emotions is not about favouring one over the other, but rather recognizing that they are interconnected and all play a vital role in our overall well-being.

When doing so we create a foundation of resilience, inner strength, and contentment. Remember, self-care is not selfish. It is a necessary act of self-love and compassion that allows us to show up fully in our lives and take care of others from a place of abundance. By embracing holistic self-care, we can find the balance we seek and experience a life that is aligned, fulfilling, and joyful.

So, let us embark on this journey of self-discovery and self-care, embracing both our emotional and spiritual needs.

May we nurture ourselves holistically, finding the balance that brings us peace, happiness, and a sense of wholeness.

Prioritize self-care: It's important to make self-care a priority in our daily lives. This can include activities such as getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and engaging in activities that bring us joy and relaxation.

Remember, self-care is a personal journey, and what works for one person may not work for another. It's important to explore different activities and find what resonates with you.

By prioritizing your holistic well-being and incorporating a holistic approach to self-care into your routine, you can cultivate a healthier and more balanced life.

In the upcoming blogs, we will delve deeper into the distinctions between the four pillars of holistic wellbeing and self-care.

We will explore practical tips and strategies to incorporate all into our lives. By doing so, we can embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery, self-nurturing, holistic well-being and self care.

In conclusion, embracing the power of holistic self-care is essential for creating a balanced and fulfilling life. By understanding the difference between the four pilers of holistic self care, we can address our needs on multiple levels and cultivate a sense of harmony within ourselves.
